Working remotely or starting a business from home sounds like a dream for most people. It has become a regular part of life for many of us. However, location independence at work is not suitable for everyone.

Whether you are a self-employed entrepreneur, small business owner, or a freelancer, there are pros and cons. In recent years, most dream of independence, working remotely, and staring an online business. We share some benefits and disadvantages to help you make the right decision for you.

Advantage #1
Roam the Globe

Everyone’s favorite pro to location independence is that you have the freedom and flexibility to move about and roam the globe while working. You can travel the world working anywhere with just a computer and a Wi-Fi connection. You can be an entrepreneur who manages your business from beautiful beaches. An online business can be run from anywhere, whether you are creating courses, selling products, or doing a live video stream for your audience. Advantage #2
Cost Effectiveness

One of the most cost-effective ways of working is having location independence. You do not have to invest in a workspace, pay utility bills, or expensive office equipment maintenance as a business owner. With strong Wi-Fi, your home is your office. If you are freelancing for someone else, you can still save money on work travel expenses. Or better, you can also relocate to another country with a favorable exchange rate where your pay goes further. Yes, it is possible!

Advantage #3
Work/Life Balance Control

Location independence creates a lifestyle that contributes to a great work-life balance because you are not physically tied to your work. If you choose to work at home, you can spend more time with family, rather than spending that extra 2 hours on the road to and from work. You will certainly have more time to enjoy the things you love and more time for self-care. The bonus is that if you or your spouse needs to move, you can just pick up and go without leaving your job.

Disadvantage #1

Discipline is Required

The most telling disadvantage of working with location independence is your ability to be disciplined. Working on your own requires enormous self-discipline and focus. You no longer have your employer or coworkers physically present to help you stay on track. You risk blowing off work, which is especially difficult if you live by the beach or in the beautiful mountains. There will be a whole new world of potential and alluring distractions. In addition, as a business owner who strives to continue to grow, unless you have a strong team, you will be the one planning any long-term strategies for growth.

Disadvantage #2
Avoiding Work Creep

Although working remotely enhances your work-life balance, it can also create other challenges, such as work creep. Some find it difficult to separate their business and professional lives, primarily when they work with location independence. Spending too much on work can lead to massive neglect of your personal life. Walking away from work when the workday ends can be challenging because it is right in your home. As a newbie online business owner or remote freelancer, you must create boundaries and strategies to maintain a healthy balance. If possible, try having your work area in a room behind a closed door. This will make it easier for you to turn off work and be present for your family at the end of the day. If possible, remove your work email from your mobile device. Our culture has made it the norm to constantly check email and respond immediately. Here are tips for how to prioritize goals and avoid burnout in your business.

Disadvantage #3
Technology Woes

Technology is fantastic because it allows us to efficiently live and work anywhere, but it can also present some challenges. If you are working in an office, your employer provides internet and equipment for you. However, if you work location independently, you will need to provide your own hardware (in some cases), accessories, backups, phone line, and internet connection. As a business owner, these expenses are expected and make great write-offs, but the responsibility is yours.
